Born in Lisbon, Portugal, in 1980, Ercynia Nunes is a visual artist whose work is deeply connected to the African diaspora through her Cape Verdean mother and Guinean father. Her multicultural background, together with experiences living in Portugal, Berlin, and Germany, strongly shapes her artistic language and ongoing exploration of identity, belonging, migration, and memory. After studying Graphic Design, she completed a Master’s degree in Visual Arts Education at the Fine Arts University of Lisbon in 2011.
Working across textile, paper, painting, and printmaking techniques, Nunes creates layered compositions that combine drawing, texture, collage, and reused materials such as fabrics, clothing, and old canvases. Her practice moves between spontaneity and experimentation, where accident and intuition become essential parts of the creative process. Many of her works are developed in fragments that later come together like patchworks or visual puzzles.
